Zakynthos or Zante has many hidden corners that still preserve a traditional Meditteranean architecture and way of life. To really appreciate the spirit of the island you need to delve beyond the crowded tourist resorts. A tour around  the island will soon reveal some key antitheses between North and South, mountain and sea, wild scenery and idyllic landscapes. These contradictions complement each other so well that they create this unique physiognomy that can only be found on Zakynthos. In the North the island is characterised by mountainous establishments, pine-tree and cypress forests and steep cliffs forming rocky beaches with deep, cool waters. In contrast, the South is flat and fertile displaying endless olive groves and golden sandy beaches with warm, shallow waters. Typical to Zakynthos are also the traditional old stone houses and the beautiful Venetian churches and bell towers found in Kiliomeno, Anafonitria and Agios Georgios Krimnon among others. Zakynthos is an island of vivid colours and aromas, of mystery and culture that will insipire and set you free. This is possibly why Zakynthos has been described by many as the Jewell of the East, the Island of Dreams and the Fior Di Levante.
