The Mysterious North

A succession of traditional picturesque mountain villages can be found in the North of the island. We highly recommend you plan a tour of the area including as many of the suggested destinations as possible. Starting from Exo Hora with the 170-year old plane tree in the village square, the old church of 1890 and the big ancient olive tree drive to Agios Leon and follow the winding road down to Limnionas for a stop to admire the view and a dive into the emerald green cool waters. Coming back onto the main road you can then move on to Kampi a tiny village that leads up to the cliff of Shiza which arguably offers the best sunset in Zakynthos. Further on the three small villages Maries (that took its name after Mary Magdalene’s visit to the island), Louha and Gyri are so quiet and still that will transport you to a different era. Coming down from the mountain and along the coast is Porto Vromi where you can catch a boat to the famous Shipwreck also known as Smugglers Cove. A panoramic view of the Shipwreck may also be enjoyed from the cliff off the monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon. Another beautiful monastery is Anafonitria, where the patron saint of the  island (Agios Dionysios) lived the last years of his life. Volimes (formed by Ano Volimes and Kato Volimes) is probably one of the most featured village in Zante travel brochures with its traditional cobbled streets and beautiful stone architecture. Approaching the tip of the island is Korithi displaying a stone lighthouse and Schinari Cape. Starting to move South we find Agios Nikolaos village where you can catch a ferry to neighbouring Kefalonia. Moving further down along the coastal road we find Mikro Nisi and finally the beautiful Makrys Gialos beach.
